Leprosy Rapid Test

Protein AI is currently developing a leprosy strip test in collaboration with the Infectious Disease Research Institute. As seen in the image to the left, a blood sample will be placed on a rapid lateral flow formatted test. The sample will be mixed with a buffer that allows it to pass across the protein test strip area (A). If the patient does not have leprosy, the test will only show one band indicating a successfully run test, but no disease (B). If the patient does have leprosy the test will show two bands indicating disease(C). By using proprietary algorithms and molecular biological screens the leprosy team has identified promising markers for the disease; statistical analysis and epitope mapping were then combined to find hotspots for recognition in people.

Design of the Antigen

The company then created an artificial gene coding for the new protein and purified the antigen. Working with commercial manufactures of diagnostic devices we have now developed prototype rapid tests and are working toward regulatory approval in endemic countries. An image of our first generation prototype is shown below. The development of the leprosy rapid test is funded with help of NIH grants 1R43AI066613-01A1 and 2R44AI06613-02.

Test for Human African Trypanosomiasis (Sleeping Sickness)

Although much earlier stage, we are also beginning to develop a test for human african trypanosomiasis. This work will begin after funding of NIH application 1R43AI082800-01.
